Disenchantment of the World: The complex state of Religious Belief in our Time
Speaker: Michael H. Hogan
A Bryn Athyn College Colloquium
The middle of the Eighteenth Century was an epochal period in the history of world religion. In 1757, the Lord brought an end to the spiritual mission of the Christian Church. While in 1770, He established the New Church on earth and in heaven. This Church was to provide humanity with a new revelation. This was done to guide human conduct and to explain, in rational terms, the purpose of Creation and the laws of divine providence.
This year, we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the New Church. The purpose of the presentation is to describe a few of the major religious and cultural trends which have followed from these momentous events. Our world has been truly transformed by these changes. We will be living with the consequences for the rest of our lives. This presentation will describe a number of these challenges for review.
