Anders is senior editor at the McClatchy Company, the nation’s third largest newspaper company and 11th largest online news network. He was McClatchy’s vice president for news for six years before there, overseeing editorial operations of 30 newsrooms and 1,500 journalists across the country. Over the past 20 years, he was executive editor at The Miami Herald, editor at the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, and executive editor at The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. He held a series of newsroom jobs, from investigative reporter to managing editor at a number of newspapers, before taking on the newsroom leadership assignments.
Anders is a long-time advocate for press freedom and government openness. He serves on the foundation board of the American Society of News Editors, the advisory boards of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies and the Inter American Press Association, and served on the boards of the Pulitzer Prize, the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism and several journalism schools. He’s a graduate of George Washington University and attended Boston University and the Academy of the New Church College.
Anders and his wife, Beverly, a former syndicated columnist and author, live in Washington, D.C. They have two grown children, Sam and Grey.
