African American History Month

This annual celebration honors the achievements by African Americans and it helps recognizes their central role in U.S. history. This month of celebration began as a week-long celebration in 1926, called "Negro History Week". Carter G. Woodson, known as the “Father of Black History,” developed Black History Month. Woodson, whose parents were enslaved, was an author, historian and the second African American to earn a Ph.D. at Harvard University. Woodson chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass, a famed abolitionist who escaped from slavery, and President Abraham Lincoln, who formally abolished slavery.
Since 1976, each US president has designated the month of February as African American History Month (Formerly Black History Month).
See below for events for students hosted on campus and virtually, or click here to view list in separate window

Our major events will be movie nights this month focusing on this year's theme of "The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity". We also invite students, staff, and faculty to participate on a discussion, literature, and poetry event (in-person and virtual) on February 17th called "Walk in My Shoes".

Bryn Athyn Campus Events:

February 10th: Pixar/Disney SOUL - 8 pm in the College Center
February 17th: Walk in my Shoes: Literature, Poetry, and Discussion Event - 11 am - College Center - Please email submissions to jonathan.carr@brynathyn.edu

During this event we hope to have students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds choose/write a poem or literature excerpt to share with the event group that they feel represents their background, history, culture, family, or life experience. Please submit a selection by February. We will also be releasing a film list for students to work through individually and in groups. These offerings eature stories about race, historical events, empathy, shifts in worldviews, and personal growth. These will primarily be films which have a marginalized protagonist or protagonist group.
