On April 20, Bryn Athyn College students and the Swedenborg Library walking group participated in the Out of the Darkness Walk by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention. The BAC Student Government Association (SGA) and friends, led by Miguel Torres and Laif Judson, raised $320. The Swedenborg Library walking team, led by Andi Sibley, raised $2065 and counting (donations are still open). Andi’s son was in the air force and died by suicide in 2017, so this walk is near and dear to her heart: “I've done the walk in the spring for several years. It is amazing to be part of the crowd of walkers all intent on doing our small part to make a difference and bring a little light to the world.”
In combination with Lower Moreland High School participants, the walk raised $5,678 to fund research, education, and support programs. Andi said, “We all paused while walking around BAC campus to make a circle on the Bean in front of the Swedenborg Library for a flower ceremony, throwing flower petals up in the air while naming and honoring our loved ones who we are missing. It was very touching to share this moment with others who have lost children, parents, siblings, friends and other loved ones in similar ways.”
